Andrea Coles creates her work using the ancient Indonesian process of batik. This involves painting images in hot wax which forms a ‘resist’ to the dyes applied on top. She uses beeswax and traditional tjanting tools to achieve this. Procion dyes are then layered and painted over the wax.
She is mainly inspired by nature and the infinite detail that can be found looking up close – at flowers especially.
Above all she aims to create joyful, colourful and unique images.
Each piece of work is a completely original one-off design. No two are ever the same.
